Computers & Tech: Min. Requirements, Deals & Discounts

Right tech at the right price

You'll need access to a computer while you're a student here. Use ours in our Technology & Computer Labs or bring your own!

Keep in mind:

  • If you're bringing your own device, you'll want one that is compatible with IU systems and that can run all the software you'll need for your studies, so be sure to review the minimum requirements below. 
  • If you're buying a new device, keep scrolling for deals and discounts available to you.

Requirements & Recommendations

Operating Systems supported by UITS:

  • Windows 10 & 8.1 (7 supported, but not recommended)
  • Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or greater
  • Linux

New computer hardware recommendations

Windows:

  • Processor: Any current-generation x64-based processor of over 2 GHz and at least 2 cores
  • Memory (RAM): 8 GB or more
  • Hard Drive: 320 GB or more (SSD: 120 GB or more)
  • Network card: Wireless 802.11g/n (dual band) (Make sure the wireless card supports 802.11n in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.)
  • Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit

Mac:

  • Any currently shipping Apple laptop or desktop (MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, or Mac Pro)

Bringing a computer you already own?

  • Minimum requirements for Windows computers: In general, Windows computers built in the last five years should be sufficient for lightweight computer usage at IU.
  • Minimum requirements for Apple computers: In general, Apple computers capable of running Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or higher should be sufficient for lightweight computer usage at IU.

UITS recommends a smartphone or tablet that runs the most recent version of your desired operating system (e.g., iOS 6+, Android 4+, or Windows 10/8.x/RT). Older versions may not provide the same level of compatibility with IU resources.
